Medicare Advantage Plans & How They Work

Navigating the world of Medicare can be complex, but at Logical Insurance Solutions, we’re here to simplify it for you. Based in Fort Myers, Florida, our experienced team is dedicated to helping you understand and choose the best Medicare Advantage plans tailored to your needs.

What Are Medicare Advantage Plans?

Medicare Advantage Plans, also known as Medicare Part C, are an alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and include all the benefits of Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). Many Medicare Advantage Plans also offer additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing care, as well as prescription drug coverage.

How Medicare Advantage Plans Work

When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, your Medicare services are covered through the plan instead of Original Medicare. You still need to pay your Part B premium, and you may also have to pay an additional premium for the Medicare Advantage Plan itself. These plans often have networks, meaning you may need to see doctors and use hospitals within the plan’s network to get the lowest costs.

The Difference Between Medicare & Medicare Advantage

Original Medicare:

  • Consists of Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance).
  • Provides coverage for hospital stays, doctor visits, and other healthcare services.
  • Does not include prescription drug coverage (Part D) or additional benefits like vision or dental.
  • Allows you to see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare.

Medicare Advantage (Part C):

  • An alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies.
  • Includes all benefits and services covered under Part A and Part B.
  • Often includes additional benefits like vision, dental, and prescription drug coverage.
  • Usually requires using a network of doctors and hospitals (HMO or PPO plans).
  • May have different cost structures, such as copayments and out-of-pocket limits.

Networks & Rules

Medicare Advantage Plans operate through networks, which can include Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), and Private Fee-for-Service plans (PFFS). Each type of plan has different rules regarding in-network and out-of-network services, referrals, and costs. It’s essential to understand these details when selecting a plan to ensure it aligns with your healthcare needs and preferences.

Comparison Between Medigap & Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage (Part C):

  • Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
  • Provides all your Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance) coverage.
  • Often includes additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing.
  • Includes a network of doctors and hospitals; requires you to use their network for lower costs.
  • May have lower premiums but involves out-of-pocket costs for services.
  • Enrollment is during specific periods: Initial Enrollment, Annual Enrollment (October 15 to December 7), or Special Enrollment Periods.

Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance):

  • Offered by private companies to cover gaps in Original Medicare (Parts A and B), such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
  • Does not include additional benefits like dental or vision.
  • No network restrictions; you can see any doctor or specialist that accepts Medicare.
  • Typically higher premiums but lower out-of-pocket costs for services.
  • Enrollment is usually best during the Medigap Open Enrollment Period (six months starting the first month you're 65 and enrolled in Part B).

Enrollment Periods

Enrollment in Medicare Advantage Plans occurs during specific periods:

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is when you first become eligible for Medicare, starting three months before you turn 65 and lasting until three months after your birthday month.
  • Annual Election Period (AEP): From October 15 to December 7 each year, you can switch, drop, or join a Medicare Advantage Plan.
  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period: Between January 1 and March 31, you can switch Medicare Advantage Plans or return to Original Medicare.

Understanding these enrollment periods is crucial to ensure you don’t miss the opportunity to choose or change your coverage.
